Rolle Rockets 1 Exeter Rangers 4
Sunday 10th December 2006
Rangers Squad: Julie Windram, Claire Witham, CJ Henman, Shewie Calloway, Ruth Willans, Welshy O’Neill, Helen Wells, Mandy King, Hayley Rosling, Tash Willey, Jodie Smith
Goal Scorers for Rangers: Tash, Jodie, Helen and Mandy
Women of the Match: Shewie Calloway
Tash Willey scored her first ever goal for Exeter Rangers whilst playing her first full ninety minutes for the Club. The young striker, a new signing over the summer, netted Ranger’s first after twenty minutes. Her speed and determination were no match for Rolle Rocket’s defence and she sprinted past two defenders to calmly slot the ball past the keeper.
Rolle were determined to get back in the game but couldn’t beat Rangers defence. New signing CJ Henman played well at right back with player-of-the-match Shewie Calloway controlling the back line to keep Rolle’s strikers at bay.
Jodie Smith scored her first of the season to give Rangers a two nil lead. The students were awarded a penalty late in the first half which Kathryn Parsley netted to bring the score to two-one.
After the break Rangers kept the pressure on being the more composed of the two sides despite the rain and muddy conditions. Willey could have taken her goal tally to at five, easily outrunning the Rolle defence, her efforts blocked by the student keeper.
A free kick was awarded to Rangers which Helen Wells curled into the top right to further extend Rangers lead.
Just before the close of play a Smith corner was played short to Wells who crossed into the box, the ball flicked on by Ruth Willans to Mandy King who slotted past the keeper into the bottom left for her fifth of the season.
The win moves Rangers above Feniton and puts them three points clear at the top of Division One and with a game in hand.

Exeter Rangers 5 Galmpton United 1
Sunday 17th September 2006
Rangers Squad: Joo, Shelley, Noemi, Tina, Helen, Lizzie, Sammie, Hayley, Mandy, Salam and Welshy. Subs: Claire on (for Salam) 52 mins, Jemma on (for Welshy) 68 mins, Tash on (for Mandy) 78 mins
Goal Scorers for Rangers: Sammie (7), Salam (9), Welshy (31), Mandy (38, 64)
Women of the Match: Lizzie
Mandy King hit a double brace to help Rangers to their second successive victory in the Devon Women’s League. King struck in the 38 th and 64 th minute along with Sammie, Welshy and new signing Salam in Rangers’ 5 – 1 home win over Galmpton United.
Rangers got off to a good start with an attacking move that ended up with four Rangers attacking in Galmpton’s 18 yard box after only 30 seconds. Salam made a darting run up the wing following Rangers’ kick off and received a perfect cross from winger Hayley. The ball was headed on by Welshy and only just slipped past Mandy to give Galmpton’s keeper a lucky escape. The goal keepers kick was weak and found Lizzie on took her chance to net Rangers’ first, her shot falling into the arms of the Galmpton keeper.
Rangers kept up the pressure and were awarded their first corner in the 7 th minute. King crossed in the ball to find unmarked Sammie who slotted home her first of the season and Rangers first of the game. Only two minutes later Welshy set up Salam who found the back of the net, her first for the Club.
Rangers continued to be the more dominant team despite not playing their best. Galmpton gave Rangers the opportunity to run into space on both flanks with plenty of time to cross the ball into the box. Salam set up Lizzie in the 31 st minute and Lizzie’s shot was tapped in by Welshy to give Rangers a 3 nil lead.
Some moments of sheer brilliance were presented to the rather large group of spectators and despite Sammie’s attempt to wipe them out, they continued to cheer for the home side. Mandy scored her first of the game in the 38 th minute, calmly slotting home Helen’s pass that made its way easily through the Galmpton back four.
Rangers kept the pressure on in the second half but were presented with a determined Galmpton player. Young Leanne Hunt, playing in the number 11 shirt, was all over the pitch and continued to place a threat if left unmarked. However, Rangers defence were solid, Tina and Shelly taking control and Lizzie and Naomi always getting back to cover. Hunt was rewarded for her determination when she slipped the ball into the back of the net in the 86 th minute.
A fine performance for Rangers on their new home ground and a good victory to take the team top of Division One.

Feniton Ladies 1 vs. Exeter Rangers LFC 4(League Match)
3rd September 2006
Rangers Squad: Julie Windram, Michelle Betty, Jemma Palfrey, Noemi Foldi, Tina Lynch, Helen Wells, Claire Witham, Sammie Griffiths, Hayley Rosling, Sarah Godbeer, Mandy King.
Subs: Joanna Churchill on (for Jemma Palfrey) 60 mins, Lizzie Allan on (for Mandy King) 75 mins and Jodie Smith on (for Sammie Griffiths) 80 mins
Goal Scorers for Rangers: Mandy King (18), Helen Wells (63), Sarah Godbeer (88) and Lizzie Allan (89)
Women of the Match: Michelle Betty
Rangers started the new season strongly winning their first game 4–1. An impressive start saw Sarah Godbeer hit the side netting after only 3 minutes. New signing Noemi Foldi’s diagonal pass found Godbeer on the right wing who was able to skip past her defender and take a shot. The next 10 minutes were dominated by Rangers attacking moves, the best of which was a Sammie Griffiths through ball to Godbeer which was halted by a dubious offside decision.
Rangers were awarded their first corner of the game in the 14 th minute, Mandy King’s ball cleared out the box by the Feniton defence. The second corner of the game was taken by midfielder Helen Wells which landed nicely for winger Sammie Griffiths enabling her first shot at goal, unfortunately one which just went over the bar.
Feniton were extremely motivated and closed down all Rangers passes quickly. Despite the opening quarter being dominated by the away side, Feniton did come back into the game and keeper Julie Windram made some calm saves to keep the score at one nil.
Rangers found the back of the net for the first goal of the game through King after 18 minutes. Godbeer collected the ball outside the box and beat her defender to get a perfect cross into King who hit the ball over the top of the keeper into the top right hand corner.
Feniton attacked aggressively, determined to get back into the game. The home side were awarded a free kick in the 41st minute, a shot impressively saved by Windram. Sweeper Michelle Betty and keeper Windram had to be at their best to keep Rangers ahead as Feniton piled on the pressure. Four minutes from half time Feniton found back the back of the net, new signing Brigette Sainsbury the scorer.
Rangers took on board their half time talk from Manager Rod Hawker and 13 minutes into the second half Wells scored from a long-range shot. Rangers played more calmly with passing moves joining up smoothly. Substitute Joanna Churchill was on fine form and put the pressure of Feniton’s defence with her speedy runs down the right hand side. She linked up well with Godbeer and the Feniton keeper had to make a series of successive saves to prevent Rangers extending their lead. New signing Elizabeth Allan made her debut in the 75 th minute, her speed and fresh legs causing further problems for a tired looking Feniton.
Feniton looked like they were going to bring the score to 2-all in the 80 th minute when a charge down the right wing was only halted by a perfectly timed tackle from Foldi.
Young Jodie Smith was brought on 20 minutes from time and minutes later she had her first shot at goal, but unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net. Godbeer scored a well deserved goal in the 88 th minute, new signing Allan making it 4-1 following her impressive volley from Wells corner one minute later.

Feniton Ladies vs. Exeter Rangers LFC (friendly) 2 - 1
21st August 2005
Squad: Sarah, Shewie, Becs, Tina, Lyn, Mandy, Welshy, Ruth, Godders, Churchy, Jo Davey, Hayley.
Scorers: Jo Davey
First division Exeter Rangers travelled to Feniton for a pre-season friendly on Sunday. Newly promoted Feniton were looking to put in a good performance before their first competitive match in the Premier Division on the 4 th September.
Rangers started off well with Jo Churchill hitting the bar after fifteen minutes following a well-directed kick from goalkeeper Sarah Hoare. 2 minutes later Feniton’s goal kick was collected at the half way line by midfielder Rachel O’Neill who skilfully went round two defenders only to knock the ball wide. Feniton responded with a rapid passing movement down the right hand side and into the box, but the goal scoring opportunity was prevented by a well-timed tackle from defender Tina Lynch.
Although Rangers remained the more dominant of the two teams, it was Feniton who opened the scoring after 31 minutes with a good strike into the right hand corner by Sally Aimes. Feniton’s Alex Titterton continued to control the midfield and made some impressive tackles preventing Rangers from levelling the score. Feniton took the score to 2-0 in the 50th minute by a Victoria Churchill shot that slipped through the defence and past Hoare.
oth teams had chances to score towards the close of the match including a 52nd minute free kick taken by Rangers Mandy King which was knocked over the bar. O’Neill made another impressive interception at the half way line but knocked the ball just wide of the Feniton goal. A long goal kick by Denise Palfrey prompted a speedy run down the left wing by Feniton’s attackers, but a shot on goal was blocked and cleared by King. Ranger’s first corner of the game in the 56 th minute was punched out of the area by Palfrey. Lynch picked up the loose ball and passed out wide to Jo Davey who slotted the ball in the top right hand corner to end the game 2-1.

Exeter Rangers LFC vs. Galmpton United (League Match) 9 - 2
4th September 2005
Squad: Godders, Becs, Shewie, Welshy, Claire, Hayley, Helen, Mandy, Jo D, Ruth, Churchy. Subs: Dippy (on at half time for Churchy).
Scorers: Helen (3), Jo Davey, Hayley, Churchy, Dippy (2), OG
Exeter Rangers started of the season with an impressive 9 – 2 hammering of Galmpton United. Rangers, joining Division One after relegation from the Premier Division at the end of last season, were keen to make a strong start. Their 9-goal victory certainly achieved this and put them top of the League table.
Neither Rangers or United started the match particularly well, and both took a while to settle into their game. Rangers were able to take advantage of a gap in the United defensive line with Jo Churchill slotting the ball in the back of the net after 15 minutes. Five minutes later Lucy Wood was able to equalise the scoring. Strong play from midfielders Mandy King and Helen Wells allowed Rangers new signing Hayley Rosling to secure Rangers second goal. Jo Davey continued Ranges strong performance by placing Rangers’ third past United keeper Lee Hayward.
United’s Leanne Hunt was able to convert the penalty awarded by referee Dudley Frood in the 28 th minute taking the score to 3 – 2. Wells responded with Rangers’ fourth just before half time.
An unfortunate incident in the 60-minute resulted in Davey needing a trip to hospital and Rangers being down to only 10 players having used sub Sarah Diplock at half time. This didn’t stop Rangers’ strong performance and complete domination of the game. Wells was able to score two more and central defender Shewie Calloway made a solo run from the half way line, beating keeper Hayward to make the score 6 – 2. United had a chance to bring the score to 6 – 3 when they were awarded a penalty, but keeper Sarah Godbeer made an impressive, outstretched save to tip the ball over the bar and keep the score at 6 – 2.
Half time substitute Diplock finished two impressive movements through midfield set up by Wells and King. Wells completed her outstanding performance by scoring her third of the game, her first hatrick for Rangers. Despite United bringing on substitutes Kerry Martin and Megan Tracey in the 75 minute, the damage was done and the game ended 9 – 2.

Roborough SC vs. Exeter Rangers LFC (League Match) 2 - 2
25th September 2005
Squad: Godders, Lyn, Shelly, Welshy, Tina, Helen, Mandy, Sammie (80), Jo D, Ruth, Claire.
Subs: Hayley (80 for Sammie), Becs (not used).
Scorers: Mandy (19), Claire (54)
Exeter Rangers travelled to Plymouth on Sunday to take on League newcomers Roborough SC. Rangers were looking to continue their 100% winning streak, and Roborough, who were beaten 2-0 by Rangers only two weeks previously, were hungry to take the three points from the current leaders of Division One.
Roborough, starting with only 10 players, put the pressure on Rangers from early on. However, defenders Shelley Betty and Rachel O’Neill put in strong performances to stop Roborough taking an early lead. A free kick awarded to Rangers in the 19th minute was taken by Betty and found Mandy King who put in a fast paced run into the box and slotted the ball past keeper Rachel Cain.
Roborough, now with 11 players on the pitch, kept the pressure on Rangers and were determined to bring the score level. Numerous long balls up the pitch found Abbi Hollins, but the Rangers defensive line prevented any shots on goal.
As half time approached Roborough had the opportunity to level the score. Roxanne Byrne picked up the ball just inside the area and was able to find the back of the net, although injuring Rangers keeper Sarah Godbeer in the process.
In the second half Rangers settled more into their game although still weren’t playing to their full potential. Strikers Claire Witham and Ruth Willans both had chances to give Rangers the lead but failed to beat keeper Cain. Kaylee Symons remained strong and in control of the Roborough defence and some well-timed tackles prevented Helen Wells and Sammie Griffiths having a shot on goal.
In the 54th minute a Wells corner found Witham on the front post who headed home to give Rangers the lead for the second time in the match. Griffiths kept the pressure on Roborough and made some impressive runs down the right flank, but Rangers were unable to further extend their lead.
Symons continued her incredible performance and was able to feed the ball to Roborough’s strikers on numerous occasions. Despite Abbi Hollins collecting the ball in space, she was unable to build on the three goals she scored last week and the score remained 2-1. Keeper Godbeer made an excellent save in the 73rd minute to keep Rangers’ lead. In the 81st minute Byrne scored her second to bring the score to 2-2. Despite strong determination from both teams in the closing minutes the game finished 2-2.

Exeter Rangers LFC vs. Liverton United (League Match) 1 - 1
23rd October 2005
Squad: Godders, Bec, Shelly, Welshy, Claire, Helen, Sammie, Jo D, Hayley, Ruth, Churchy.
Subs: Mandy (45 for Jo D), Lyn (70 for Bec), Shewie (70 for Ruth)
Scorers: Churchy (94)
Women of the Match: Helen
Moo of the Match: Sammie
Exeter Rangers were keen to remain top of the Division but needed to beat fifth placed Liverton to prevent Chaddlewood Minors from taking over as leaders. Despite Rangers impressive record for the first part of the season, the performance was a weakened one to that of previous weeks leaving doubts as to whether they could remain unbeaten.
Rangers did dominate the early play and had numerous chances to open the scoring, but keeper Emma Jones prevented the ball from hitting the back of the net. Both Ruth Willans and Jo Churchill had opportunities to give Rangers the lead, but couldn’t beat the quick reacting Jones.
Rangers keeper Sarah Godbeer was hardly tested in the first half and only came out to the edge of the area to collect loose balls on a couple of occassions. However, it was Liverton who opened the scoring late in the second half through Anna Finnemore. The ball fell nicely to Finnemore who was able to slot the ball past keeper Godbeer.
Mandy King was brought on into her normal midfield position at half time and Jo Davey was rested. Some strong team work with Helen Wells and some accurate balls down the left wing to Sammie Griffiths failed to result in a goal. Rangers kept dominating the play and continually testing the Liverton defence. However, Liverton's defence put in some well timed tackles to keep Willans and Churchill out of the box. Jones was also repeatedly tested and Rangers were only stopped from going level by her fast runs from her line to collect the ball.
20 minutes from the end of the game Willans was subbed and Rachel O’Neill was moved up the pitch to fill her shoes. Shewie Calloway, making her first appearance since suffering a nasty injury 6 weeks ago, came onto into central defence. Some good team work amongst the Rangers back four kept the score at 1 – 0. O’Neill had three good chances in the space of five minutes and only narrowly missed out on being the hero of the game. In the 94 th minute Helen Wells put a Rangers corner perfectly into the box, only to be panicky cleared over the back line by Liverton’s defence. Well’s second fell to Jo Churchill who volleyed home to bring Rangers level. Winger Hayley Rosling had a chance to give Rangers the lead but unfortunately the ball was knocked wide.
The score ended 1 – 1 and Rangers were lucky to come away with a point. Liverton keeper Emma Jones kept the away side in the game, and although Rangers dominated most of the play and had numerous shots on target, they could only come away with a point.

Exeter Rangers LFC vs. Dynamo Torquay (League Cup Round Two) 1 - 3
13th November 2005
Squad: Godders, Bec, Welshy, Shewie, Tina, Hayley, Helen, Mandy, Jo D, Ruth, Churchy.
Subs: Jacqui (65 for Bec)
Scorers: Churchy (40)
Women of the Match: Godders
Moo of the Match: Helen
Premier Division Dynamo Torquay are through to the third round of the Westward Development Devon Women’s League Cup following Sunday’s 3-1 win over Division One leaders Exeter Rangers at Newton St Cyres.
The late arrival of their kit and the absence of a referee weren’t the best omens for Dynamo Torquay in what was the third second round meeting between the sides in consecutive seasons. In fact, the game stated 35 minutes behind schedule after it was agreed that Dynamo club official Kevin Shenton would take charge when there was still no show from the appointed match referee. In the event, the extra time give over to the warm-up seemed to benefit Dynamo, for they went ahead in only the fifth minutes when Stacey Green’s powerful shot from the edge of the penalty box flew straight into the top right hand corner of the net.
Rangers equalised through Jo Churchill seven minutes before the interval, though Dynamo would still have gone in at half time a goal to the good had a free kick from Vicky Elliot not been headed off the line.
The second half started in much the same as the first, with an early goal to restore Dynamo’s lead. It came from the head of Helena Ruffles after a cross from Rachel Gue, the close range finish not unlike one of Michael Owen’s two goals for England against Argentina in Switzerland on Saturday.
As, expected, Rangers demonstrated why they are top of Division One with some sterling defence and quick breaks as Dynamo rung the changes from the substitutes bench in an attempt to stretch their lead.
Indeed, there was still only one goal between the teams going into the final 10 minutes when Caitlin Labajo prodded the ball home from close range after the Exeter goalkeeper failed to cling to a powerful shot.

Exeter Rangers LFC vs. Torridgeside (League Match) 9 - 0
27th November 2005
Squad: Godders, Shewie, Bec, Tina, Ruth, Helen, Welshy, Claire, Churchy, Jo D, Mandy.
Subs: Melia (67 for Tina), Hayley (70 for Mandy)
Scorers: Jo Davey (38, 43, 63, 69, 84), Mandy King (52), Churchy (62), Godders (74), Hayley (81)
Women of the Match: Claire - continual running and 110% effort for the entire game
Moo of the Match: Mandy for failing to score from Jo's perfect pass
by Ruth Willans (thanks to Melia and Hayley for the notes!)
Rangers, playing their first League game after two hard cup matches were faced with 8th placed Torridgeside. Rangers, who started the game being second placed in Division One following Holsworthy's win last week, were the dominant of the two sides from early on. Despite having the majority of play for the opening half hour the home side failed to take the lead with both Mandy King and Ruth Willans missing good opportunities. Jo Churchill had numerous shots, although largely just wide of the Torridgeside goal. Midfielder Helen Wells played some lovely balls down the left flank for wing back Claire Witham, although all shots seemed to fall directly into the hands of the Torridgeside keeper.
Jo Davey opened the scoring in the 38th minute by heading home a Helen Wells corner. Some poor defending allowed Davey to find some space and neatly headed
the ball past the stationary keeper. Five minutes later and Davey scored her second of the match. Rachel O'Neill dribbled through the Torridgeside midfield and passed to Mandy King who laid the ball off to Davey.
Torridgeside came back quite determined after the half time break and despite some runs at goal Rangers keeper Sarah Godbeer was too quick off her line and stopped any shots. Sweeper Sharon Calloway controlled the back line well and both Becky Dunbar and Tina Lynch put in strong performances to prevent a Torridgeside goal.
The Torridgeside keeper was struggling following a knock to her left knee and problems with her asthma. Mandy King confidently scored 7 minutes into the second half with a powerful strike. Davey continued her high scoring ways netting two more. 30 minutes from time Sarah Godbeer swapped with midfielder O'Neill. Godbeer put in some energetic runs and, collecting the ball in midfield, sprinted through Torridgeside defence finishing with a powerful strike into the top left hand corner. A few minutes later Jo Churchill headed home a Helen Wells corner to take the score to 7 nil.
Torridgeside's best chance of the game was saved by O'Neill. Lynch also put in am impressive sliding tackle just in front of the goal mouth to prevent a Torridgeside goal. Unfortunately this caused Lynch a calf injury and she was shortly taken off. Witham dropped back to cover Lynch and Melia was brought on. Only Melia's third appearance of the season but played extremely well with some impressive runs down the left flank. 20 minutes from time King was brought off and Hayley Rosling came on. Rosling was injured only two minutes later when a high challenge in the box caused a heavy nose bleed. The indirect free kick was taken by Helen Wells, although cleared by the Torridgeside defence. Rosling was well positioned just in front of the goal mouth to easily knock home Rangers's eighth goal from a Davey cross. Rangers's ninth goal came following a speedy run down the right flank by Ruth Willans who crossed the ball into Davey who was waiting on the goal line to slyly slot the ball past the keeper. Torridgeside kept going right until the end and their keeper did make some impressive saves. All credit to them. Although the loss leaves them now in 8th place, just above the three student sides and struggling Lamerton.

Exeter University Reserves vs. Exeter Rangers LFC (League Match) 0 - 4
4th December 2005
Squad: Godders, Shewie, Bec, Claire, Ruth, Mandy, Welshy, Melia, Churchy, Jo D, Hayley.
Scorers: Ruth Willans (25), Mandy King (39), Churchy (50), Godders (72)

Moo of the Match: Rod - for trying to fill the bucket of water up in the shower and realising that the water couldn't be turned off as it was on a timer!
By Ruth Willans (thanks for the notes Tina!)
Exeter Rangers continued their bid for promotion with a four nil win over Exeter University Reserves. The three points leaves Rangers four points clear at the top of Division One.
Rangers, with midfielder Helen Wells on holiday and Tina Lynch out injured, managed a mere eleven for their local derby. The home side were also depleted, with three players called up to play for their first team. Rangers had a slow start to the game and needed 20 minutes to settle into their stride. They did however remain the dominant side with the majority of possession. Despite this domination, the students did test Rangers defence and Sharon Calloway put in some excellent clearances. In the 23rd minute Rachel O'Neill crossed the ball into Jo Churchill who hit the bar in what was the best chance of the opening half hour. A Churchy cross two minutes later found Ruth Willans who slotted the ball past the keeper to give Rangers the lead. Some poor defending by the students gave the ball to Mandy King who hammered in a powerful 20 yard strike. King remained troublesome and hit the woodwork twice in just as many minutes. Jo Davey failed to get her name on the scoresheet when she hit the crossbar one minute from half time.
Keeper Sarah Godbeer exchanged places with midfielder O'Neill and kept the pressure on the student defence. In the 50th minute Davey collected the ball in midfield and passed out to Willans on the right flank. Willans speedily dribbled to the goal line and crossed the ball across the goal mouth to Churchy who slotted home Rangers third. Defenders Becky Dunbar and Claire Witham were less active in the second half as Rangers attackers controlled play within the students half of the pitch. Witham did have an impressive sprint down the right flank 15 minutes from time, although the ball was cleared by the students. Some poor defending in the 72nd minute was intercepted by Godders who skillfully hammered home Rangers fourth, her second in just as many weeks.
Rangers seventh victory of the season leaves them unbeaten and keen contenders for Division champions, although they are yet to face Chaddlewood.

Combe Martin vs. Exeter Rangers LFC (League Match) 1 - 5
8th January 2006
Squad: Sarah H, Claire, Lyn, Tina, Ruth, Welshy, Helen, Hayley, Churchy, Mandy, Jo Davey.
Scorers: Jo Churchill (30, 32) Jo Davey (12, 24)), Helen (43)
Women of the Match: Lyn
By Ruth Willans (thanks for the notes Shewie!)
Exeter Rangers travelled to north Devon to play seventh placed Combe Martin in their first game of the new year. Rangers, still without sweeper Shewie Calloway following the dislocation of her knee cap, did have Helen Wells and Tina Lynch back in the starting line up, although defender Bec Dunbar was surprisingly on the bench.
Rangers started strongly and missed an opportunity to take the lead after only 40 seconds when Churchy headed the ball over the bar. Rangers kept the pressure on and only three minutes later Mandy King’s shot was saved by the keeper. Combe quickly settled into their game with Stacey Turton starting some good attacking moves, all of which were blocked by Rangers defence. The muddy and very sticky goal mouth proved disastrous for Rangers when Alice Geocomini gave Combe the lead in the 10th minute from a shot just outside the six yard box.
Prolific Jo Davey equalised only two minutes later when she slotted home her thirteenth of the season following a well placed King pass. Rangers continued to dominate and had the majority of the possession in Combe’s half of the pitch. Churchy and Davey both proved troublesome and Churchy nearly put Rangers ahead in the 22nd minute, her shot narrowly going wide. Davey did manage to give Ranges the lead with her second of the game in the 24 th minute following a scramble in the Combe goal mouth.
Rangers attackers continued to give Combe problems and King was unlucky not to score in the 30 th minute when her powerful strike was saved by one of Combe’s defenders. The ball fell nicely into the path of Churchy who was able to easily slot home to take the score to 1-3. King hit the post less than a minute later but this time the ball was subsequently knocked clear by Combe. Rangers fourth started from defender Lyn Pike who calmly passed the ball to Churchy who made a dashing run down the right flank and knocked the ball past the stationary keeper. Rangers scored again just before half time, this time from a Helen Wells solo effort involving some skilful manoeuvring around numerous Combe players with a powerful strike to finish the first half.
Following the break Rangers maintained the pressure and midfielders Helen Wells and Rachel O’Neill set up some lovely attacking moves, with Davey and Churchy both missing chances to further extend Rangers lead. Wells second on target shot of the game was saved with an impressive dive from the Combe keeper in the 55 th minute. 7 minutes later the Combe keeper put in a second remarkable save to keep the score at 1-5. Combe responded in the closing minutes with numerous runs down the left flank, all of which were cleared by replacement sweeper Claire Witham. Stand in keeper Sarah Hoare saved Combe’s best attempt of the game. Ranger’s last attempt to take the score to 1-6 was unfortunately hit over the bar by Davey. Despite numerous missed opportunities, Rangers did come away with the three points that will keep them top of Division One.

Exeter Rangers LFC vs. Exeter University Reserves (League Match)
5 - 1

Subs: Kath (70 for Hayley), Bec (not used)
Scorers: Helen (35, 56), Jo Davey (46, 51, 72)
Women of the Match: Tina
Moo of the Match: Ruth - for starting the game in the wrong half of the pitch
By Ruth Willans (thanks for the notes Shewie and the photos Kath!)
Exeter Rangers secured their 9 th win of the season in a 6-goal spectacular at Exeter University’s home ground on Topsham Road. Despite the frost that put Rangers pitch out of action, both teams were full of energy and keen to take the three points.
Returning to their familiar formation and with striker Jo Davey back from holiday, Rangers were no match for the bottom placed students.
The pressure was on the University defence from the moment the game started. Ruth Willans was denied Rangers first by the student goalkeeper after only 10 minutes. The through ball from Mandy King allowed a shot and the first save of the match. 4 minutes later an error by keeper Victoria Hayward gave Rangers their second opportunity to open the scoring. King, who picked up the lose ball, unfortunately powered the shot straight into the arms of Hayward.
For the next 20 minutes Rangers dominated play, although not to their usually high standard. Some swift movements down the right wing failed to get the ball into the box and numerous interceptions occurred preventing attacking moves through the central midfield. Hayley Rosling knocked through some lovely balls on the left-hand flank, but any chance of opening the scoring didn’t seem to happen for Rangers.
Midfielder Helen Wells broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with an impressive series of skills allowing her to swiftly move round the university defence. Her shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal had too much power for Hayward to even get a finger to it.
One minute into the second half prolific striker Jo Davey scored her 15 th of the season following an accurate pass from King. The ball slipped through the defensive line allowing Davey to run through and take a shot at the stationary keeper. Rangers continued to hound the defence and their speed and ability to find space in the box appeared too much for the students.
Jo Chuchill’s shot in the 51 st minute was knocked away by Hawyard, only to fall into the path of Davey who put away her second of the game and Rangers third. Wells kept her cool in the 56 th minute to net an impressive shot from outside the area which appeared to effortlessly curl into the right hand corner of the goal.
The students sub in the 75 th minute appeared to bring a new lease of life but not even the pace of first team midfielder Georgina Sears could brake Rangers defence. Left back Tina Wells kept the defence solid and put in some fine tackles to add to already impressive performance.
Despite the students determination to close the scoring gap, Rangers continued to dominate play and receive the ball in space. Substitute Kath Trim put in a outstanding performance on the left flank and even had the opportunity to score her first for Rangers. Unfortunately defender Alexa Kearns knocked the ball wide. Willans kept the pressure on the university’s right back, Dino Rock, and found ample space in the 72 nd minute to pass the ball into King who was waiting on the outside of the box. King’s shot fell into the arms of the keeper, but Davey was again in the right place at the right time and was able to net Rangers’ fifth of the game. Anna Graves did snatch a consolation goal in the 76 th minute to end the game 5 – 1. |

Exeter Rangers secured their 10 th win of the season with a 13 nil trouncing of struggling Lamerton. Despite the determination from 10 – woman Lamerton, the newly formed team were no match for the high-flying Rangers.
Rangers started with one of the best performances of the season. The usual 20 minutes ‘settling in period’ was absent, perhaps due to the new more focused warm up. Jo Churchill opened the scoring for Ranges after only three minutes from a shot inside the penalty area. The speed of Rangers attackers took Lamerton’s defence by surprise and an early corner was awarded by stand in referee Michelle Betty following a panic clearance by Lamerton. Helen Wells found Mandy King in ample space and poor defending gave King time to calmly take a powerful shot, netting Rangers second.
Continual pressure on Lamerton and some impressive movement down the flanks made Rangers the more dominant of the two teams. A poor kick by goalkeeper Zoe Stock allowed King to set up Davey for her first of the game in the ninth minute. King continued her impressive performance to set up Ruth Willans in the 12 th minute. Willans was able to tap the ball into the bottom right hand corner following King’s perfectly placed cross.
The home team’s attackers continued to prove troublesome and Lamerton’s defence appeared tired with some sloppy marking giving Rangers ample space. Davey took advantage of the space on the left flank to run through into the box slotting the ball past Stock for her second of the game. Struggling Lamerton took a blow when one of their players had to leave the pitch due to breathing problems.
The nine-woman side kept battling and did manage to occasionally knock the ball into Rangers half of the pitch. Unfortunately Lamerton, playing very much a defensive game, had no one to chase the ball down and defenders Tina Lynch and Lyn Pike had no problem passing the ball back to Rangers midfielders.
Rachel O’Neill set up Willans in the 25 th minute following some impressive link up work down the right hand flank. O’Neill’s cross allowed Willans to hammer the ball into the top left hand corner sealing Rangers sixth. King continued to cause problems in the box and her shot in the 35 th minute took a deflection before hitting the back of the net. Her shot 7 minutes later following a well timed pass from Churchill cleanly found the back of the net. One minute from half time Wells found enough space to dribble into the six yard box and knock the ball past Stock.
The second half saw three changes to Rangers starting 11 and a considerably improved performance from Lamerton. Striker King was rested and new signing Kath Trim was brought on. Manager John Asher swapped right back’s Pike and Dunbar and brought on Melia Kirki for Rosling on the left flank. The fresh legs didn’t phase Lamerton and their defence worked extremely hard to close down Rangers attackers.
Keeper Zoe Stock made some incredible saves to prevent Rangers from further extending the scoreline. Despite a considerable amount of determination from Rangers, Lamerton kept the ball out of the back of the net for 21 minutes. Only in the 66 th minute did Davey manage to pick up a high ball in the penalty area and beat Stock with a header into the top right corner.
Lamerton still panicked when Rangers were on the attach and gave away numerous corners. A Churchill corner in the 78 th minute found Willans on the top of the box who hammered home her third of the match.
Injuries to the already weakened side saw the away side reduced to eight. Despite Lamerton now playing an entirely defensive game O’Neill managed to get a shot on goal which hit at least three defenders before finding the back of the net. Keeper Godbeer swapped positions with Trim in the last 10 minutes and sealed Rangers victory by calmly positing the ball in the far left-hand corner in the last minute of the game.
The win leaves Rangers three points clear at the top of Division One and Lamerton still waiting for their first point of the season. |

Exeter Rangers are now three points behind second placed Roborough with a game in hand. Their encouraging 5 nil win over student side Rolle Rockets leaves a good chance of taking the Division One title.
Sarah Godbeer was in explosive form and had netted her first of the game after only nine minutes. Hayley’s through ball was collected by Godders on the edge of the penalty area where she calmly took the ball round Rolle’s lone defender and slotted the ball past the keeper. An amazing start by Rangers and just what was needed in the battle with Roborough to take the title.
Rangers dominated the game and their pace up front and strong marking at the back caused Rolle to panic whenever they got the ball. It is fair to say that their two forwards, probably the team’s strongest players, didn’t give up and took the opportunity to attack the goal whenever the ball wasn’t being kicked over the back line or knocked out for a throw in.
Helen Wells, returning from injury, made a great impression in midfield and started some amazing moves. Wells also linked up incredibly with fellow midfielder Rachel O’Neill. Rangers second actually came from a O’Neill header which Godders was able to run onto. Godder’s pace was too much for Rolle’s defence and after 25 minutes Rangers had found the back of the net for the second time.
Godders presence in the Rolle penalty area was certainly causing panic bells amongst the Rolle defence, so much so that in the 33 rd minute Godders was brought down unfairly by not one, but two defenders. The referee rightly awarded a penalty and whilst Jo Davey was preparing herself, Rangers water girls dashed on to make sure Godders was alright.
The Rolle keeper stood no chance with the power of Jo Davey’s shot, and although she did get her hands to it, she could only knock it away. Jo Davey had followed the ball up and managed to cleanly slot the ball in the top right hand corner for the third of the day.
Rod’s half time talk inspired us all to continue working hard and keep pushing the already exhausted Rolle.
O’Neill, trying out her newly taught skills, much to the delight of Rod, weaved through two students to thread the ball through to Davey. Her shot hit one of the half asleep defenders and found the back of the net. Four nil after 75 minutes.
Mandy King came on for Churchy in the dying minutes of the game and provided a beautiful ball through to Wells seconds after she was on the pitch. Wells, who had played amazingly in her first game back from injury, took advantage of the space allowed by a completely exhausted student side, to shoot from outside the box for Rangers fifth of the day.
A well deserved 5 nil win. And although not quite on par with our performance at Liverton, still something to be proud of.
